    WA Radiator Repair person needed

When the Defender has to do work beyond the usual, fast up a hill, fast with aircon on, etc, the temperature gauge starts to creap. Time to get it looked at.

Trouble is I am scared to go to someone who I don't have an ongoing dealiongs with getting me on the phone and saying "Mate, you need a whole new radiator, or you need a recore" or something like that when a good flush or rodding was all that was needed. If Ireally need some major radiator work then so be it but....

Anyway WA people - can you recommend a radiator specialist. I live in Mt Lawley so near northern suburbs would be good.

Could have been Leo's Radiator service. That's where they are located and over the last several years they have done (a) one of my Lancia radiators, (b) replaced my County radiator core and (c) fixed my County heater matrix.

Seems to have done a reasonable job, no fuss, prompt service. Took him on trust that what he told me needed doing was the truth, but haven't had any probs.

Good luck James... I went through this 6 months ago, after several quotes and one was allegedly "mates Rates" I ended up buying a brand new one from the UK cheaper then a re core here, including freight. I think from memory recores about the $440+slab "mates rates" my import was around $465 delivered Brand new not a re core in L/R box.from memory

Its really a shame I reckon, that we have got to the stage where we expect to be ripped off and lied to by tradespeople.
I find that generally the local person who isn't an employee of a large chain tends to be more honest. Whether they are more competent is maybe different.
I remember 15 years ago, my son had a $600 Sigma and was worried about the brakes, and took it to Midas. They told him it needed the lot wheel cylinders etc etc at a cost of $900.
I asked him"does the fluid go down in the master cylinder?" Noooo.
My advice is to be pleasant, but ask to be shown the reasons, if a place recommends more than you thought necessary.
If you have the original pommie rad and you have ever been on a beach, you fins are probably dust by now, so that in itself is probably reason for a recore.

Pop into Britpart and have it checked over...they're in Welshpool.

Could well be worth thoroughly flushing it out first yourself though....

    Thanks for the replies everybody.

I bought the car off a mate and I am trying to track him down to ask if he ever did anything to the radiator. 178 000 km on the clock, I doubt it is the original core.

But yes it has been on a beach.... but we don't talk about that. Just find my gallery to see what happened.

I sure as hell won't be getting a radiator from LRA if needed. Thanks for that tip too.

Hi James. Mine is the exact age and only a few digits of serial number from yours and mine is fine. It has been flushed every year and has had many, many coolant changes. Natrad in Morley fixed Number One Son's monster V8 SIIa as it was weird. As yours is a bog standard Defender 300Tdi I would go to Brit Parts or Rovercraft.
