    Series III 6cyl running problem

Recently my 1974 Series III 6 cylinder petrol beastie has developed a nasty habit. Whereas it used to start and restart first turn of the key it now is reluctant to restart. By that I mean after a 20Km run and say a 15 minute park the engine wants plenty of choke and several turns of the key to get going. When driving off it then has the annoying (and possibly dangerous) habit of faltering, coming close to stalling, when throttle is applied. This may occur up to several minutes after starting but after that everything reverts to normal.
Can anyone tell me what is happening? Nothing under the hood has been changed.

Prior to you was it being run regularly?

And have you gone very low on fuel?

It just may be that you're picking up crud with driving it more often. A clean-out of filters, fuel bowls etc might do the trick.

Not sure how the choke works on it, it might have a bit of crud in the choke jet.

    Regards

I would check the diaphram in the carby and ensure that it doesnt have a tear in it also make sure the dash pot has oil in it.
Certainly give it a tune up plugs/points/leads etc.
Give the carby a good looking over maybe even give it a good going over with a tin of carby cleaner.
Then once all this is done screw the adjustment screw on the bottom of the carby out in incriments of 1/2 a turn and see if this resolves the issue.
To me it sounds like it is running lean this is NOT a good thing on an F engine they will burn valves before you can open the bonnet.

    Thanks both for your ideas.

Tusker - the answers are 'probably not' and yes, I have run low on fuel recently. I'll check the filters as you suggested.

Djam - dash pot is good. I'll check the diaphragm for leaks asap. I'll put a tune-up at the top of the list too.

It has me puzzled because most of the time it starts perfectly normally but has played up several times with this horrible faltering.

    G'day DiscoDave

check you Vacuum line for cracks/breaks or the Fuel pump filters (in the pump) or the pump points.

    cheers

JohnE - That will probably turn out to be the correct answer. Now how do I do the exorcism?

UncleHo - G'day and thanks for those ideas. Vacuum line is good. I'll check the fuel pump as soon as I'm able. (I'm doing the disco timing belt at the moment.)

The point gap was too narrow and I've adjusted that. Everything seemed much the same on a test run - I'll see what happens next time I drive it into town.
