Thread: LT 85 noise normal or not.

mine has a whine in the higher gears... and from the tyres....and then there's a rumble from the induction...and the exhaust vibrates too.... so

IME I've come to the conclusion that if some noise is not too mechanical then it's part of the joy of driving such a machines....

that said, my LT85 had been rebuilt before I got it, so perhaps it's one of those things you have to allow for some time down the track

the 95 and 85 are marginally more noisey than say an r380 but both should be quieter than a series box...

the taller gears whine more than the low ones when things start to go out of whack.

check + change your oil first (test it before you change it if you can...

the castrol oil Ive dropped into big red has silenced the tcase whine that I could here but everyone else thought was normal BUT putting it in the gear box has ment that my shifting has to be right on the money and the first 4 or 5 shifts are very notchy.

I'll be going back to nulon or penrite in the main box shortly Im going to give it 10K km on the castol and see if it sorts itself but I doubt it.

Thanks for the reassurance, i was a little worried because I could hear it with all the other noise. It is noiser than the Lt95 in my ute in which i can only hear the transfer case whine above the other noise. I will check the oil when i change it, if there is a problem would i expect to see little flakes of metal in the oil? I also had the thought that if i took the top off the box i might be able to "somehow" see if there was play in the shaft but that, I guess should be next after the oil.

your looking for excessive "sparklies"

the bronzy brassy colored ones in small quatities at the end of the oil drain arent a problem, If you have trouble shifting but can still get it with a good double clutch and the sparklies have stopped showing up your syncros are shot. They wont cause further issues at this point unless you force the box and begin grinding the teeth of the dogs. (part of the syncro mech not the main gears)

If however you have bright, shiney Silvery speckles thats bad.. how long you want to leave it after these show up depends on how brave you are and how deep your wallet is..

I'll try but cant guarentee to get pics of oil with the good sparklies in and the bad sparklies.

Ok, I think i have seen the golden sparklies from other gearboxs. Would i be right in thinking that the bad bright shiny sparklies would be steel? In which case i could just use a magnet to determine if they are as bad as they look.

yep a magnet will help no end If you can let all the oil drain across it by placing it at the end of a hose in a funnel for the best results.

when you replace the plugs try to get the ones with the magnets in them as they will trap the metal bits and stop them from circulating.
