    Smile TD5 Power loss problems

Recently our Disco D2a TD5 developed a severe power loss issue. Hills that it would normally power up at 100km/h with the torque converter locked in would now see it struggle to get up at 60km/h with the auto hunting around for the right gear. Checked all of the normal culprits, (turbo intercooler hoses etc), but in the end took the vehicle to the LR dealer as it is still under its extended warranty.

Turns out is was a faulty MAF sensor and Turbo Wastegate Modulator. Both replaced and now back to full power and speed. Cost was around $900, thank %*^# it was covered by the warranty. The warranty premium has definitely paid for itself this year!

That said, if I was paying for the MAF, I probably would have tried to clean it first...

From other threads elsewhere on this issue, it seems that this problem crops up a fair bit. For those concerned, I hope the above gives you some indication as to where to start looking...

Just a small tip that may save you around $500 if it should ever happen again, you can get the MAF alot cheaper than that at around $400 at the most, from memory i only paid $300 maybe cheaper and the wastegate modulator should only be $45 genuine.

IN hindsight yes cleaning it may have worked, but dealers won't do this
