Most 3.9 oil consumption is usually down the inlet guides as long as rings are OK.
Once they get a bit of age the umbrella seals harden and leak more.
To give an idea, mine went from about 1litre in 5000K to nil when I put late heads on with teflon seals.
At that age it is an idea to replace the head gaskets, have a head service and have teflon seals put on the inlet guides only.
As long as you do not have leaks and the rings are OK, that should be all needed. The guides themselves are usually OK.

BigJon,
HPR10 is 10W-50.
Had another look under the Disco last night - I'm now not so sure that I don't have a significant oil leak. Doesn't leave oil on the driveway when parked but there are oil droplets on one of the oil cooler lines - the one coming off the block at the rear end of the sump. I assume that this may be leaking only when the car is being driven - with increased oil pressure????
Looks like either the lines are leaking at the fittings or the 'O' rings - search of the forum suggests this is common.
I'll still follow up on previous suggestions including compression check and removal of the plenum.
I'd like to fit an oil pressure gauge but there doesn't appear to be much room around the oil pressure switch for a "T" piece and second transducer.
Is there an alternative - I've seen an adapter which fits between the block and oil filter - sandwich syle.
Cheers
Rodney
