Here is some interesting data I have trolled up from D2Au. In this first bit, it's not so much the dates, but the comments re head design and reasons for failure.

    > Was it the MY02 or MY03 that brought in the metal dowels?
***Late 03my from memory, also the heads are different hence the
reasonson for the introduction of steel dowels.
    (basically locators thats all)
I could presume that the steel dowels were introduced to the later
models because of an increase in torque & power..!

    >How frequent do these things fail and are there any trends?
***Not often & no trends, theres normally underlying factors that
contribute to head failure, overheating being a major one of them.
Also this in relation to retrofitting steel dowels. This can not and should not be done for every TD5.

URmmm yes there is... the dowels soften with heat and distort somewhat.. which means you can have head/block/gasket alignment issues. but your right in that once the head is torqued down they are superfluos.

If youve cooked a TD5 youve got to replace them.... (and as the book says if your doing a head job you should replace them with the steel ones if they are in the VIN range)
