Thanks Michael, good info, I'm learning a lot here fast, which is great, In the UK i see they run inline heaters for the SVO which would be something to keep an eye on, and yes that Bio seems to be pretty effective at cleaning things out, I might just watch that from a distance for a while..
Regarding spending money, I am just looking for a vehicle with more predictable expenditure cycles! I have had 3 LR V8's now and can honestly say I will never own another:) The TD5 would have to be the choice wouldn't it? I would like to wait around for a good truck with a bad engine though feel I could be waiting a while, Though I may just get the 130 Td5 and keep an eye out for a bargain Isuzu! as I would prefer to have a spare Motor waiting than a whole vehicle/project being hurried!
Thanks all for your input!:)
I was under the impression that the Isuzu engine wasnt fitted to anything over here after about 95 but I could be wrong but thats why I said an early 130 as I think they started coming out around 94 95 if I remember right but again I could be wrong.
All cars no matter what they run engine wise will cost money, 300 TDI is no better or worse than a TD5 (in a defender that is) but just different things go wrong with it and can be more exy to fix though some things are cheaper such as turbo's.
The 2.8 inter motor is the best choice by far as all the problems of the 300TDI seem to have been sorted with them but they are not made anymore so are getting a bit hard to get.
In my opinion I would not own a vehicle that has been butchered. If I wanted more power than the TDI could produce I would take it to Rumble LR in Dungog and get them to recalibrate the pump and put it on gas,it would go like a train with no hassle's and be cheap to run. They have one up there know like it and that's my pick. You are probably correct, we used to have a small Isuzu which had the 3.9 4bd1 and I assumed that the current models had the same or similar. However having now researched I find I am wrong.
My apologies.
In the same vein, if the Isuzu 4bd1 was so good and given improved performance over time. I wonder if you could fit the ISUZU 4JH1-TC using the same bellhousing components? It is a 2.999cc 4 cyl turbo-charged engine in the same sized truck as the 4bd1 was fitted?
National Truck spares in Arncliffe are always bringing in 2nd hand engines etc from Japan for the local market. It may be a new option instead of the 200 or 300tdi Rover donk? There are likely to be lots of them around!
Unfortunately in Land Rover's wisdom and lack of reciprocating dealer loyality - they are no longer LR Dealers. Nissan I think now.

Rumbles will stay LR.They have been there to long. Pat
I haven't seen one with an alloy tray, all I've seen is steel and there is a significant weight difference between a steel tray and an HCPU.
The rest of it's about money. The differences between a Tdi300 and a Td5 are academic, electrics, bio-diesel, blah, blah, blah.:D:D:D
You know how much money you have to spend. Find the 130 with the lowest Kms in the best condition for the money you've got.;)
Or if it really means something to you I'm sure there are guys around to offer up a drive. I'm in Sydney, tdi300 130 very solid steel tray if you want to try.
Cheers
Simon
Hi Simon, I'm looking at an alloy tray one this week out of curiosity. So which is the heavier the steel or the HCPU, sorry I have no idea, I imagine the steel but I've been wrong before!
I'm on the northern beaches, thanks for the offer! PM me when suites you.
Cheer's
Dan.
