    Cheap Pure Sine Wave Inverters.....

Thanks to an older neighbour who is in to motorhome's and solar power I know have an inverter which (as I already had it) cost me nothing. New it was about $50 on clearance.

We were talking about inverters and he showed me what he now uses which is an old UPS system. (Uninteruptable Power Supply)

It reminded me I had one sitting in the shed, the beauty being it is also a pure sine wave one. Not sure if I'll keep the battery pack in it, may as it still works fine.

He bought his through an Auction as the batteries weren't included (It was off a much larger system) but even mine is rated at 10amp.

He paid about $100 for his and it runs the microwave, tv, bar fridge no problems (It has been installed and used regularly for the last 2 years)

I'm sure Ebay and the like would be worth a look

    Hi Cooksie
Funny you mention these,Graz told me about them a few weeks ago.
Apparently when the battery dies, these UPS systems are ditched and replaced with a newie.
The Inverter is still as good as gold, and its pure sine wave as you mention!!!!

I got mine cheap as Tandy were getting rid of it (battery use by was only 6 months away). I figured for $50 even if I had to replace the batteries (2x 6V 4.2 Amp) it would still make a really cheap UPS.

Now I have a better use for it..... (Sorry dear the UPS has died... we need a new one for the computer )

Good quality clean 240V and large capacity. Just not sure if I will leave the batteries in (mounting it would be easier without the weight... have a spot in mind.) and need to cover the buzzer, or remove it. Would like to know what the charging ability is because you could even plug it in to the mains to charge the aux battery. hmmmm so many possibilities

    No way....are you sure?

A UPS has died at work with the alarm going off all the time and I looked at it and thought ...What could I do with this?

Its all to be thrown out.

For the first time for a number of years I am very keen to get to work tomorrow

Like I say he has one in his Mitsubishi something or other campervan (small truck) he uses regularly.

I'm going to work on squeezing mine in, the only thing I need to do is work out what to do about the alarm that it has to let you know the mains is out (beeps about every 5 seconds.)

May just make it very hard to hear as it has different beep rates for different things, low battery etc and it does remind you it is in use (has a power switch on it so if turned off the "beep" is also turned off)

We have 2 UPSs at work that we just got new batteries for. They take two 18amp 12v batteries each. The batteries are about $55ea at Jaycar.

The units with batteries weigh about 30kg each so not light at all. Even without batteries they would be at least 10kg each.

I'll have to keep my eye out for one.

that beep is software controled (or it was in the one I did this with) and all you need is the data cable that lets the PC talk to the UPS and if youve got the software you can change some of the beep settings.

A word of warning about using these as sinewave inverters... They dont have a lot of headroom on them and most will shut down almost instantly if pushed too hard. Where a 300w sinewave inverter might drive 450w for a minute or so and be able to push 600w for a few seconds to start something (guestimating numbers here) the UPS type inverters rated to 300w might do say 350 and 400. but if your just using it as a phone charger or to run a laptop they're good news.

Love this thread, I've been looking for a cheap inverter on eBay for months but now I'm kicking myself for dumping my UPS a couple of months ago. I'll have to start looking at some used computer places.
