Best to leave the axle in there, as when removint it, you only introduce rubbish into the housing, they snap and the broken bits generally remain captive, ALWAYS remove the centre to remove the axle bit when you get home as its the on;y way to clean everything properly
Remember not to mistake a broken axle with a CV
Drivers with series Landy's that have holden motor's, without upgrading the drive-line can be in peril, too much right foot at the wrong time, eg- if the wheel bounces up in the air up and over rocks then hoof it, and as it comes back down, and grips, it has the potential to snap, as has happened to friends Landy's. It comes down to driving sympatheticaly to the vehicle, don't rush big obstacles. ;)
How am I going to know if its the axle or the CV when something in the front lets go?
