Thread: Clutch on th way out - TD5

Well after 187,000km the clutch on the Disco is starting to give up the ghost and slip a bit. She feel really "shallow" at the moment if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I have been told by my mechanic that the fly wheel may or may not need to be replaced and that a new one is about $1000. Apparently they cant be machined like others...why is this?! and is there anywhere I can get a new one at a good price? I have been told only to fit original parts and not to go aftermarket.

The mechanic also reckons I am up for about another $2K for labor. So what exactly is involved with this job and while does it cost sooo much?! Does this sound right?

Any advice would be appreciated. I am in Melbourne.

The flywheel will be alright as long as you have not burnt the clutch to buggery. which by the sounds of what you are saying you have it early.
There are two ways to change the cltch. Gearbox out or Engine out
I always take the engine out as i do it in my garage and don't have th truck 8 foot in the air. Where as garages tend to take out the gearbox as the truck will be 8 foot in the air
Just sounds like he wants to up the bill.

i have never changed a clutch on a td5 but have helped pulling an isuzu motor out of a 110 a few times to do a clutch change...........$2K at $100p/h = 20 hours, thats 2 1/2 days, sounds a little too much to me...could be wrong but reckon it should be out and in a day if they had all the parts

The flywheel on my 99 TD5 was replaced under a recall and the dealer had the job done in less than 1 day by removing the gearbox. They had a few to do but would only book 1 a day so they could use the hoist for other jobs too.

i'm going to try and get a mate of mine to make a solidmass flywheelso they can be machined


toyota and nissan both use the dualmass flywheel
both also have a after market solid flywheel at around $380

same on both my 2000 110/130TD5 Defender's

they both went within 500k's of each other
