Yep a clutch cahnge in a workshop should only take 5-8hrs max depending on the vehicle and about $900-$1000 total. He is trying to rip you off. Clutch kits are not that dear. There is a mob that make 4wd specific clutch kits at the momment, I can not remember the name and the kit is about $600 retail and that is an expensive clutch. Clutches are fairly cheap no matter what this mechanic says. Ring repco in Melbourne who I believe supply a fair range of clutch kits.
When I had my Pajero done 10 years ago (I know prices will have changed but will give you an idea of rip off prices), I was quoted $3200 for a gearbox rebuild (bearings and seal only) and clutch by Mitsubishi. One of my Dads mates did it at a Ford workshop and charged full workshop rates for $1200. If we had more time he could have done it in his back yard for about $800 and still made his hourly rate. He was the one that told me clutch kits and gearbox bearings are far cheaper than most people think.

Yep, I remember getting this recall done. I was working nights at the time. Dropped if off at 0730 and they woke me up at 11:30 to let me know it was done

They did tell me at the time that since it's a fixed cost they get their best person onto it!

Last clutch I did (admittedly a few years ago) REPCO were considerably dearer than dealer supplied
