During the repair the guys at coopers think I have a slipped liner

Lpg back fire should'nt cause a sliped liner why does ward think you have one i would have thought it would be hard to tell without removeing the heads.... which you dont have to do to replace vally gasket symptons are water loss hard to start in mornings (till the waters out of the pot) blown head gaskets if your gonna do 1 do all 8
T
the back fire doesn't have anything to do with the liner, but it made a mess of the valley gasket
There is a slight "pop" when the engine starts, this has been the thought that it may be a loose liner
no over heating apart from one time 18 moths ago when it got very hot in the bush, was stood in one place for a while, when move on, cooled down immediatley, temp guage remains rock soild in heat or cool weather
thanks
doen't sound like a metalic pop, more like an air pop
i have had the heads done in march 07
didn't hear any pop this morning
what does a slipped liner sound like?
thanks
ps on the water leak, had serious probs with leaky radiator, replaced at time when heads done, leaked again, replaced under warrenty, temp gauge remains rock solid in same place 1/2 way
thanks
Slipping liners make a tapping noise when the engine gets hot/warm and it goes away when the engine cools down. Apparently the noise is caused by the liner touching the crankshaft balance mass,
cheers Charlie
You may not actually get any noise with a slipped liner. I have just been through this exercise with a 3.9 out of a rangie. I did have a water loss issue, it was thought to be the welsch plugs, they were leaking but the blown head gasket was putting too much pressure into the cooling system and essentially blowing them out. There were no regular strange noises. I could sense something was wrong, but the mechanic said it was tuned to within tolerance. This was especially frustrating as I'd just had the gearbox out to replace the plugs at the back of the motor only to get confirmation one day later that the head gasket was blown.
End result, all pistons warped, cam buggered, 5 moving liners, 9 valves not seating properly and the block had lost its hardness and needed to be heat treated twice to bring it back to the correct hardness.
Can't comment on how it goes now cause we only got the motor back on Wednesday and its still sitting under the house.
Its had some work done to it, so next for me I think is going to be axles

Would a compression test show a slipped liner?
