Cheap winch or good 2nd hand one?

I've never required a Tirfor in nearly 10 years....6 of that doing stuff much more "hardcore" than most on this board, always been able to self recover;)

Like Damien said, the best option is a second hand high mount, they're much more basic in design and a much more reliable winch than a low mount:)

Also righted a few that have done a blackboard impersonation..."upside down, upside down"

The thing with a winch is you may never use it in anger but if you need it then it well and truly pay for itself, regardless of what you paid for it. Not a lot of history on the cheap Chinese copies but if you can afford traditional brands then go that way.
Not to good if you have carried around a heavy winch for ages only to to be stranded because it let you down when you really needed it.

Wouldn't the wire end up unbelievably tight, or is the multiplication effect of the snatch blocks on the rear enough to overcome the forward pull easily?

Yep, I'd be interested to know how you organise snatch blocks to move a car backwards with a front mounted winch without running the cable directly underneath.

Just interested. Might be handy.

I've done slingshot style, where you move someone elses' truck from behind you..... but not my own.

High mount has the electric motor mounted above the spool, low mount has it mounted next to the spool. High mount has better gearing and doesn't transmit heat to the spool, low mount is slower but easier to mount into a bullbar. High mount is better in my opinion.

Yeah I reckon you could still do it with two blocks. Though i think if you only used two then you may not be pulled straight back but be drag back and sideways a bit...depends on where the trees are I guess.
