    PAS fluid change

The PAS fluid in my Disco smells burnt and is dark in colour. Is it possible to change the fluid by opening the bleed screw, firing up the engine and keep refilling the reservoir?

Will the same synthetic ATF as in the LT77 be ok for the PAS? (Mobil 1 ATF)

the best/messiest way (and this is an abridged version) is jack up the front end. Grab an assistant. Place a big tub underneath the car. Undo the return pipe to the reservoir. Put a 1/2" cap on the spigot (one off a piece of copper tube is ideal) use a 1/2" diameter tube (again, copper is ideal) and shove in the return line and place the other end in the tub. Get your fluid handy and start the engine with your assistant tipping fluid into the reservoir. Grab a front wheel or turn the steering wheel and pull onto full lock and hold for a few seconds. Do the same on the other lock. Do this a few times and keep flushing until clean fluid comes out. Put system back together.

Another way and the cleanest of all is just get a big syringe and keep sucking the fluid out of the reservoir over a few days and keep topping up with fresh fluid, but it could take quite a few days/week of this as Landy's seem to have more fluid in the system than most vehicles.

an even cleaner way is rather than running the engine, turn the steering wheel lock to lock at a moderate pace. (with the front end jacked up) this will slowlly pump the fluid out the return hose. due to valving it only goes one direction regardless of which way you turn the steering wheel. keep topping up the reserve to avoid drawing in air (plug the opening where the return line goes so the new fluid don't pour out). keep doing until new flud comes out the return line

to make it even cleaner you can run some hose from the return line into a bucket.
