Thread: D1 tyres which size

I Don't mean to hijack your thread Reads90 , but I wish I knew about this site a while ago , I put a set of 245/75R/16 BFG Muddies on my king Steel Rims, Originally had the Disco Alloys , I kept getting flat tyres ( had 2 on same trip ) due to the softness of alloys ,but apparently the tyres might be a little too wide /// or for lack of better description the Off Set on the rims maybe wrong ...the tyres stick out slightly with respect to the fender or guards...& on a recent trip to the spanish steps both rear tyres had deep groves longitudinal wise on the sides of the treads which was apparent from guards / fender digging into the tyre on full articulation when vehicle was being driven , I've had to Trim a lot more off almost hard up against the side Trims but even then on full articulation the guards and bottom of the fender are still digging into the rear tyres.

I suspect I would had been better off with 235/85R/16 and one of the blokes i go 4x4ing with had them on his disco he's had no issues with them and hasn't had to modify his guards as much as I have done on mine.

235/85 is pretty good but yes, you need a guard trim at the back.

If I were to keep them as a std tyre I'd look at changing the high ratio to the same as the Defender.

The problem is i want some tyres that look a bit more bigger than the 205's but the misses drives the car to and from work and we will be doing alot of k's touring. And as a 300 Tdi Auto don't want too big as to reduces the already crap pull away speed . But also will spend more than 80% of its time on a road so don't want the speedo out too much , don't really want anymore pics of my car from the coppers

I am now going to sell some of the 235 85's and i am going to get some
245/70R16 or 235/70R16
I don't need some big mud tyres as i will be getting a toy for that soon any way

245/70 is a good size and you won't need to trim your guards, i had these on my TD5 when i first got it and they were very good and my speedo was spot on.

I ran a set of Motorway Longreach remoulds 245 - 70/16 on standard alloy rims with a 2" suspension lift. They were fantastic. I got 103,000km out of them over 2 years. No rubbing. They were great in the wet as well. They also corrected the speedo so it was 'spot-on'.

For everyday use go with 245/70 16

For a tyre that is better off road go with 235/85 16 but remember it will slow the disco down abit because of the gearing but not much.

in fact even with muddies its fine its only when you get on the articualting stuff it needs a tiny trim

My Disco had 255/70 16 a/t's on it when I bought it. No cutting required even on full articulation. The speedo was spot on too.

Muddies might be slightly taller with the thicker tread or maybe it is a difference in brand actual sizes.

This is what i am now thinking. Could keep a set of 235's for playing Which would be the same as the 90 and the camper trailer. But also get a set of 245/70 and have them for main driving. And have a set for the camper trailer too. After all i do have 5 sets of land rover/ disco rims so should easy to do
