Thread: Rhino Roof Racks on Disco II question?

Rhino Roof Racks on Disco II question?

I have a 2003 Disco II with the stock roof rails (front half of roof). I am looking to get some Rhino Racks that I can add a Rhino Aluminium Roof Tray to when required and therefore want to fit 3 racks.
    My question is:-
    Should I get:
    - 3 gutter mounted racks
    - 2 gutter mounted racks and 1 roof rail mounted rack
    - 2 roof rail mounted racks and 1 gutter mounted rack

An important consideration is do the gutter and roof rail mounted racks all end up at the same height and therefore will they work with a roof tray that spans the 3 racks?

I have found that asking such questions of stockists draw blank stares that do not give me confidence to put forward an order so I am hoping that someone is using Rhino Racks on their Disco II and can give me some advice. Thanks in advance.

as I understand it unless the standard roof rails have had the roof reinforced their max load is about 60kg so best to aviod them

I would go with all gutter mount, which I have done. The previous comment is correct that the roof rails are only rated to 50kg and the manual says 35kg off road. Rhino do have spacers to level up bars anyway.

Thanks for info. I think I might go for 2 gutter mounted racks and a smaller tray.

For a D1 but still the same, i have 2 rhino racks that sit over the rear or front of the roof with a cage that the previous owner had made from folded mesh with some angle iron.

    Roof racks

I use the Rhino cross rails for the roof rails for light stuff and the 200mm gutter mounted racks with a large tray for a serious trip away. just the 2 racks seem to suffice , i would think 3 racks if on a LOOOOng trip with heavy gear though, especially if a lot of off road was on the cards.

If you go with the Rhino Rack, don't forget that they sell spaces as well if everything isn't quite level. Perhaps not an issue with Discos but with sedans, it's more common.

Decided to go for the 2 gutter mounted racks and a 1200 x 1040 tray. Should fit nicely on the higher part of the roof. Thanks for the advice.

Be advised though... Total Load on the roof ANYWHERE using ANY RACK is max 60kg (including racks)

    Defender is 75kg

With such low weights permissable on the roof - what is the go if you want to use a roof top tent? I don't personally want one but just wondering as I weigh in at 100kgs the missus at less than 60 and then the racks and tent itself would put it around 200kgs.
