Not likely, they are pressed on there pretty good. All I can think is that the fan pully bolts may be a little loose, try tightening them?
How about checking the tension of the balancer bolt? might be the balancer coming off, again unlikely.
Probably not much help, sounds like one of those problems that would need a visual to help with.

On the weekend, the fan started fouling on the bottom (crank) pulley. There wasn't much clearance to start with, but now it the fan blades have notches in from where they have been contacting the bottom pulley. But sometimes I can start it and the noise (of the fan blades touching pulley is there, sometimes not). The bottom pulley and the fan/ water pump pulley are both solid and there is no play. No bolts are loose anywhere.

The only thing I can thing of is the water pump spindle is somehow moving backwards into the pump housing? Anyone had this happen before???

Have you tried a lever between the front housing and the back of the crank pulley? There can sometimes be a bit of endfloat in the crank, which will cause the crank to move in and out when, say, the clutch is pushed in etc.
The fan blades are quite close on mine, and it wouldn't take much to hit them I don't think...If the endfloat in the crank is a problem, I THINK you can fit new thrusts in situ? I know you can in a Tdi...
It is very rare to have the water pump shaft move that easily and NOT leak. The shaft is pressed into the bearings and is also in the impeller. If it were that loose, I would suspect the impeller would've come loose on the shaft/ stopped rotating by now

Thanks Justin (and others). I will check the crank - but it would have to be about 5-10mm of endfloat!!!

I haven't put a spanner on the fan/pulley bolts yet, but there is absolutely no play when I grab the base of the fan or the pulley. Will pull the belt off and put a spanner on this arvo.

the first thing we check on a cummins when they start to go threw belts is the balancer & end flote.

I have just fixed my water pump with a kit. Agree with Larns, the prop. end is pressed on very firmly.
My fan blades are no where near the bottom pulley. There is a spacer between the water prop (dont know the right term) and the fan. Having that the wrong way round??, but then the belt wont line up.

If the water pump shaft moves the either the water pump blades foul with the engine block or if it floats out the pump will foul with the water pump body so dont think it is an issue with the pump.

if yovue got a harmonic balancer type front pully it may be shot, try leavering the outer ring of the pully if it moves much (1mm or more) under gentle leverage its shot

OK well I am an idiot - the front pulley bolt was MISSING and the pulley had moved forward. When I checked it on the road It had no freeplay and I was sure I felt the nut - but must have been the end of the crank.

Have to pull everything off and check the keyway is OK.
