you also might not be trying to torture it into failing like I was...
if its not on consistantly you might be inside the duty cycle limits.
Ive gotten it to happen twice both times towing 2t+ on soft sand at road pressure. But then I was aiming for a "lets see what gives up first" type result I had the Tc light stay on and the tc stopped working. When I called rover about it the best answer they could give me was the pump overheated and temporarily shut down.
I was a sceptic as to how good it was untill I tortured it.
dont panic, Even if it goes out to lunch it will come back and while its out you'll just have to rely on the rovers normal outstanding offroadability and a bit of skill to get you through
Theres a thread on how to turn it off and to paraphrase the end result
"10 rapid applications of the brake pedal with the ignition on and before the TC light self extinguises will disable the TC the ABS will remain functional and the TC light will remain lit"
works in big red which is either an 02 if you ask the computer or an 03 if you belive the layout of the engine
but shes not pommy built which probabley explains why Ive had so little trouble with her, apparently gremlins dont like heat.

....arrhh...fair enough Dave. I havent tried that. I always air down and havent tried to test its durability. 10 mins though of max torture is pretty impressive given that no one will ever get to that point when aired down.
Cheers
If your tyre pressures are too high the ETC will activate. When you get them right the ETC does next to nothing. Personally, I prefer it to be on in the sand.

Do you have a CDL Slunnie?
I have seen a TD5 with traction control have difficulty when trying to resume motion after stopping on the sand.
My non-traction control vehicle in the same place did not have such difficulty.
Having said that this vehicle did not have a centre diff-lock either, so maybe it was the lack of a CDL that was the actual issue.
Who knows. It certainly won't hurt to know how to disable the TC anyway.
Thats is a draw back of TCS I have found without CDL Grizzly - ie starting off in very deep soft sand.
thanks everyone who put a comment up here.
i'm going to try the ten pumps thing just so i know i can get out of the s**t when i get myself into it!
have a great chrissy
