    Air conditioner - recurring problems.

    Defender 300tdi.

I'm on my third round of regassing in three years.

First was when I bought it, top hose to compressor worn through on air filter housing.

Second, cracked join in top hose to compressor, seemed to be from setting aside compressor when replacing head.

Third time, took it to mechanic, he gave the hose a wiggle - join from top hose to compressor had worked loose - all the cold had escaped out through the loose join.

The hose is less than three years old, the joint is about a year old.

Anybody else had vibration problems with air con on the 300tdi?

Any idea about what I should do to stop this happening again?

    Thanks fridgies.

    Cheers

Replaced the metal pipe, the rubber hose, the front cooler (worn from winch cable to battery rubbing).

In ten years I don't think it's actualy cooled the car after the first 2 years, absolutely woefull excuse for air-con I've been associated with.

BTW I have given up and let mother nature do its best by open window & vents.

Yeah, it improves my Land Rover wave no end. Wife and kids aren't so happy without the chilly breeze.

Best fix is to go buy a Disco, the Air con works great and Ive heard very few complaints of hoses and connections being a problem.

never had a problem with hoses, but mine is a '98.

Must admit that the air con has only been hooked up for the last twelve months as I removed the condenser not long after buying it and only replaced it twelve months ago.

It's a shame LRA never fitted the OE system as it's integrated into the heater box and therefore you don't have the big ugly space robbing ducting/box underneath the dash.

When I refitted the condenser I also noticed an immediate increase in temp when climbing hills, so it blocks a bit of airflow to the radiator.
Check the fins per inch on the condenser vs the radiator.

Mine's a 94 and works well now that I think I have fixed a problem in the switch.
No gas problems, no extra heat on hill problems.
I am firmly gripping a piece of wood while typing this one handed!

There was an excellent product in the refrigeration industry called "Leak Lock" from the USA. In a tube & is/was coloured blue.
Is available from Refrigeration & Air Cond trade wholesalers.

Rick still has his hand in, so to speak, so he may know whether it's still available.

I used it satisfactorily for many years & like most sealants, the threads need to be degreased & cleaned properly. It stays semi-hard & if necessary can be undone normally.

    Seems it is still available
