ok what have i done, 300tdi filter change

I changed the fuel filter in my 300TDi this week. Did not bleed it. Yes, it ran rough for 5-10 seconds and then appeared to self bleed ok

I've got a spare pump (NEW) in the back of the Defender. I'm at work, but will be home hopefully by 6pm. I'm in Bayswater, just down the hill from you. If you need the pump, PM me with your phone number (I lost it) and you can have it for the cost of a replacement pump.

Sounds like you are sorted but in an emergency I'm told you can just bypass the lift pump as the injector pump is capable of drawing the fuel in all but extreme conditions...
... but that's just what I've heard. I can't speak from personal experience.:)

Always been a mongrel to bleed after afilter change. I used to use a rag and air compressor in the fuel tank whilst cranking it, and cranking it and then going to get the ute to help charge the battery and then crank it some more.

On your TDI be careful of spiders hiding in the airfilter!

Yeah. My lift pump has failed in the past without me noticing it. Mechanic has pointed it out

Thanks All AMV were open this morning, Have the replacement part to be fitted when i get home:)

Yeah my lift pump was dead for who nows how long and didn't affect running at all. I usually bleed my filter with the engine running. You just crack the bleed bolt and sit a rag at the top of the filter to soak up the mess until air bubbles are gone.
The 300Tdi does self bleed, I remember when you had to bleed the whole system on the old diesels if you ever ran them dry,-a pain in the ummm... rear.

As an aside has any one replaced their lift pump with a small electric one, such as a facet or similar ?

Ok all fitted, and running well, Mostly still a odd surge every now and again, still think there is air in there still, I have craked to screw on top of the filter housing, and i'm still getting the sound of air coming out for a brief second, have tried as suggested above, bleed screw open whilst running, still getting little bubbles,

So how long to these take to bleed:confused:, i tried for about a 1 min, still bubbles , so before going any further just thought id check ;)

Sounds like you make have an air leak somewhere. I'd check all the joints you have had apart especially those upstream of the lift pump.
