Do I have to explain my self or will you just take it that I HAVE MY OWN BLOODY OPINION AND THATS ALL.
I know that you and a few others will disagree with anything I say just because I said it and I think Dave covered the mods item quite well but I will add that I would be talking to the EPA before saying that putting mod chips, upping the boost and fuel or modifying intercoolers are all legal as in most cases they are not and this includes 300TDI pump mods.
As far as Tyres, well I had TD5 Disco 2's in mind so point takes, as it is not the car it is the engine we are talking about but I had it in mind that for a certain brand of AT tyres that I can buy in 235 85 16 for my disco 1 cost $200 each where as on a D2 they are closer to $350 for the 255 blah blah balh whatever 18".:eek:
But then again, for a fender or if you are running 16's then it would be no different so point taken.:p
Well then on the insurance.........I costs more then, we all agree on that.....:o
Ok so you lot are saying that you only service every 20k kms and filters do cost more but then you effectively use half as many........But they do cost more........:o
As far as fluids go, I can run general fleet oil in my 300TDI without any problems in 15w 40 but I was under the impression that in the TD5 it is recomended something like 10w30 synth diesel or some crap like that but in this case I could be wrong so if I am I apologise....:angel:
Im not forcing any one to buy a 300TDI, I am just stating my opinion and if people hold my opinion in that high regard that they feel like I am shoving it down their throat or making them do something then this is not something that I am meaning to do or wanting to do for that matter but that would be their problem and not mine I am sorry to say.:(
As far as making HP that is legal and fairly cheapish for a 300TDI you can always fit LPG fumigation which not only cleans it up but makes more HP and cheaper to run and with the gov grant isnt out of reach of most people who are looking at modding their Disco.
You could probably also do it to a TD5 but I havnt heard of anyone doing it as yet but I would like to hear about it if there is anyone about who has.
This I think is under $3k after the grant so is comparable to the performance mods that were spoken about.

So basically, it comes down to cost, and since I don't really intend on doing any remote touring at this stage I should look for a td5 if I can afford it.
Another question. Which engine is easier to get extra ponies out of - 300tdi or td5?
I know with the td5 there's the bigger intercooler, ECU chip upgrade, but what about the 300tdi which is all mechanical?
Also, can an auto box be mated to either the 300tdi or td5 easily?

Ultimately, you will get more out of the TD5, purely as the fuel delivery system is more refined.
More efficient intercoolers, (either larger core or water/air) MTQ's Mitsu TD04 turbo upgrade, Variable nozzle turbo and manifold off the 2.8HS, etc, work exactly the same for 300Tdi in giving you a lot more ooomph, then you go into internal engine mods, eg head porting. All basic engine work.
I dunno the details but am led to beleive the adapter between the engine and gearbox is the issue - 300Tdi more or less a staright bolt up from the Disco one, but apparently enough differences in the TD5 setups to make it a bit more complex ?
MR Auto are the people to talk to - they have done both types of conversion before.
You need to consider what’s in each model, not just the engine type. Like any product, the D2 was designed to be an improvement on the D1. I have had early and later model D1s and they were great for their manufactured date period. The D2 is now superseded by the D3 and so on. Therefore, we choose which technology to stay with or advance to. I generally wait for a new model to be around for a couple of years so most design faults have been identified and corrected.
Technological progress is inevitable, remember the “electronic fuel injection vs carburettor” arguments in the late 80’s and early 90’s?
