    300tdi vs td5

    Hiya gurus,

Is the 300tdi more reliable then the td5? Although the td5 has more power doesn't it?

I'm looking at a Disco and wondering which motor is the better one to get?

What are the benefits of the td5 over the 300tdi?

Also which years were the 300tdi and td5 available for the Disco and Defender?

    Cheers.

Td5 is a lot more refined than a Tdi , But in saying that the Td5 has had more dramas than a Tdi for starters problems with the Td5 = plastic head dowels that fail , oil pump bolt that comes loose and cost,s you mega bucks , but all those should have been sorted by now as it was the earlier models that suffered those dramas
Also the good old oil in the harness problem i think will always be there

The Tdi only sufferd timing belt failure to my knowledge , but that has been sorted over time now

If you were good at some mechanicle jobs id go Tdi if not go the Td5 at your banks peril this is only my opinion

Others have had good runs out of their Td5,s so i stand corrected

Plastic gead dowels dont make a difference once the head is torqued down properly.
and the oil pump bolt is something you only have to check once and make sure or get it loctited on.

    300tdi 94 till 98
    td5 98/99 till 2007 I think
I've had both and no real problems (so far)
    Paul.

    77 series3 (sold)
    95 300Tdi Ute (sold)
    2003 XTREME Td5

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

I did say those problems should have been sorted by now ,and it was only the early models that suffered that drama

Mine is an early model 1999, and both those things dont make a difference as long as the oil pump bolt is checked, and the head is tensioned properly, from my understanding. Could be wrong though.
I think with all Land Rovers if you get a good one it will be great and look after you, but if you get a bad one you will regret it foreva.

    hi mate;

i've had a 97 disco Tdi for 5 years now , no major issues, except for replacing Clutch , as it was worn out at 180K , never replaced since new ,Timing belt done at 180K , was done since 100K , But no other major work done...

However my sister's TD5 , has broken down 3 times, left on the side of the Road with a little baby inside ,apparently the the computer packed it in .. lucky she was still under warranty and LRA replaced the Computer ...

I've got one of each and they are both excellent engines. TD5 has more power but the 300 is still respectable if you drive it like you hate it.

If you've got the $$ go for the TD5, but you won't be disappointed with the 300, so you can't lose really!

Im a big fan of the 300TDI as im a huge fan of mechanical simplicity and not so much of electronics in 4wd's.

From my point of veiw and I have been prooven wrong to a point so far with a lot of TD5's is that even electronics will wear out and they are in generally harder for the average mechanic to sort out and normally much more expensive.
