    sloppy box

Hi guys, get ur mind out of the gutter

My series 3 gear box is getting worse. It used to just jump out of 3rd when on over run or coasting but now it is doing it on 2nd making it very anoying. I have never played with a gear box before so have no idea how to fix it, so what causes this and how can i fix it. I am pretty good with fixing stuff but am nervus to pull the box apart.

Number 1: I have the manual and pdf of the car on my comp. so could probably work through it

Number 2: should I get a newbox. Ie cheaper.

Number 3 : has any one got a box they want to sell in the sydney area that works

Number 4 : If i am mucking around with the box should i check any thing else as I think the car has done close to 1 million ks no seriously !!!

Number 5 : I do most of the kays on the freeway so apart from fitting a hispeed TF case what can i do to the box to make it run slower on the F/way

    thanks in advance.

Its a long time since Ive worked on a Series box but this is what I would do
Buy yourself what you believe is a box in good condition pull it down and put synchros bearings and seals in it.
Series Boxes pretty durable although not particularly strong, but a Series box with a million ks on it is probably shagged
A lot of the major parts you buy for a Series box today are substandard so you may be better off with a good one rebuilt
I recall finding debris during oil change and then driving around Australia with a Series box dont get too hung up about the debirs.
If the high speed transfer doesnt cost you a fortune it could be a wise move.

Thanks Djam1 Yea it was about 8 months ago i found the metal crap in the box, I but diddnt think to much of it as it worked fine. but since have given the car torture over the past 6 months Been used as a daily driver and taxi between noosa and sydney ( you gueesed it it I am now deaf) hahaha.

It is quite drivable but i pain in the **** in sydney. not to mention I am stikking to a bet to drive it accros the simpson then from alice then to tennant creek then acrros the Tanami Desert then to perth then accross the nulabor then home to sydney.

A route my old man did regulaly while working with internernatinal harvester back in the 70,s and 80,s

He will be driving myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy luxury disco with every thing on it and i will be driving the series with no air con ,,, cause he recons i am weak and the young folk dont know how hard it was in the days.

weel seee . ( ps I am shi1ing my self)

The jump out of gear problem is probably with the synchromesh, and the bit you mention could well be one of the springs from it. But the rest of the box is presumably worn as well. A known good box would be easier and better perhaps than overhauling the box. Although the extra synchro makes driving easier, the S3 box seems to give a lot more trouble than does the S1/2/2a box.
