That's exactly how I expect it to be. It is certainly the way I have done it in the past.
I wouldn't have thought that the factory system would have had a motor in the driver's door. The Jap systems I have seen did not have a motor in the door as the driver's lock is operated with a key which trips a switch and sends the signal to the other motors to go up or down.

Didn't get to the door today unfortunately. Had a bbq instead.

Another thing to consider is lubrication of the actual door locks (latches).

I was having locking/unlocking problems with one door of my D1. A quick spray with WD40 to the lock mechanism - problem solved.

I suspect that WD40 is not the best lube for this job and so I would appreciate advice as to alternatives.

I have used silicon spray in the past for exactly that.

Just had the driver's door apart and this is how it was done. Wires from the alarm go to a master door motor (doesn't need to be a master) which operates the driver's door lock. The other motors are operated via the switch in the factory door motor.

The factory wiring is pathetically light as you say. I will have to bite the bullet and rewire the car with heavier wire and the aftermarket controller as you did. The only thing that puts me off is pulling the doors apart is so painful.

Just got back from Jaycar. I bought the controller. I'll probably wire it in stages so I don't get too annoyed with it :(
