I had one on my Series 3, and like others have said - will winch all day (as long as your engine is running)!
Another thing is because it runs through the gear box, it has different speeds. For tough going, first gear, for winding in cable afterwards, top gear.

i have a thomas winch for my S3 its the only reason i brought the car,i brought the winch & it had a landrover attached only wanted the winch but decided to rebuild the rover aswell..i will putt some pics on for you soon as i take some..

Was wondering what a shear pin does. How do you get new ones?
Bugger! Had a manual a year ago Muddy that you could have had, but it has gone now:(
The shear pin is a safety device that is designed to break if the winch is overloaded. The Cruiser I was working on had had the rope wound into the fairlead rollers by a couple of Bozos who didn't read the manual first. So after bending the rollers and breaking the pin; guess who was left to fix it?
I managed to contact Powauto in Qld who told me to use 1/4" brass rod for the pin which I machined on the lathe. The hard part was lining up the drive shaft holes to knock out the 3 broken pieces, so that the new one could be tapped in. This is one part of the winch which was poorly designed, as compared to the AACO which had a screw in pin.
If you ever replace the shear pin make sure that the recommended material is used - never, ever; anything stronger, as otherwise an expensive part of the winch might break first, or worse still someone might get killed.:eek:
