    Removing silicone

    Hi,
What breaks down silicone (its the white stuff), I have a series safari roof that I am thinking of putting on the 109. The only down fall is that who ever owned it in the past has plastered the gutter with silicone to fix leaks

dont think there is a commercial remover, this stuff sticks real well, guess from previous experience scrape off what can and use sand paper for the rest, I have used razor blades in the past as well

A wire brush seems to do the best job for me. Run a screwdriver along the gutter to lift the majority first, then wire brush it. Much less mess than chemicals. Petrol will lift it also.

petrol works but you're still best to scrape the bulk of it off first otherwise you get a sticky goo that spreads as you rub

I use a scraper or razor then attack it with a soft wire flay in a drill.

I used the Selleys product to remove silicon in a bathroom.
Worked well, you still have to scrape it off with some type of scraper but the silicon comes of very easily.

Its quite caustic and I would be careful when putting it near any paintwork or rubber.

yep, comes in a jar and the MSDS looks scary.
Bought it for a customers job and never used it.

BTW, good old Prepsol does a pretty good job of removing it. It's what spray painters use to remove any silicone residue when preparing bodies for re-filling and painting.

There is a citrus based product that is great for removing Sealastic from your hands, have'nt tried it on cured stuff yet. Also removes liquid nails etc. Its in a 750ml squirt bottle and its called DE-SOLV-IT
Cant see who makes it, but it sells as a glue remover
