Hi mrapocalypse, if you over filled the battery and the excess electrolyte has over flowed and there is not much of a smell, you shouldn’t have any problems other than the fact that you have lost a small amount of the acid.
The acid loss will mean the battery will not fully charge to the same capacity but it will be of such little difference it should not be noticeable.
Do not try to replace the acid.
If your battery is cooking, you will know it as it stinks and then you might as well replace it if it is stinking.
As to fitting another type of battery, the D2s are renowned for causing problems with the auxiliary battery being positioned on the firewall, so close to the engine.
The battery you have is actually the best type to fit in this situation as standard flooded wet cell batteries will take the heat better than Gel or AGMs will.
One thing you can do to reduce the effects of the engine heat is to fit a reflector between the battery and the engine. You can use a thin sheet of stainless steel as a reflector.
Cheers
