How have people protected their rear D2 shocks?

Hi - given that Bilsteins are monotube, just wondering how people have protected them - rubber flap bolted to control arm? metal guard at base of shock ala ARB? On my D1, I used a sleeve of black plastic concertina ag pipe for the lower part of the shock, but this obviously reduces one of the advantages of monotube shocks in terms of improved oil cooling...

The temp of the Bilstein isn't all that critical as it's gas is seperated from the oil completely - thats where it's major advantage is, so you can work them really hard and so run them hot and they will still perform. I used a pair of guards per shock from Sydney Shocks. Thes shocks have been everywhere now and been 100% abused and are still sweet.

    Cheers

How come your shocks still have their paint after the Hay River trip? My Konis lost most of their paint on the lower half and got quite large dents, including right down near the lower mounts.

Maybe he's just a very cautious driver who picks his way through the loose stuff and avoids having his front wheels throw rocks everywhere. He was always stopped when I caught up with him so I don't have any idea how he drives.

hehehe yeah. I don't get chips in the shocks because I'm usually airborne.

The pics here were taken when I installed the shocks.

The paint has been chipped off the lower parts of them though. When I changed the springs a year or so ago I also resprayed the shocks. When I had the mounts changed the welds were sprayed black by bilstein, so I just changed them all back to Bilstein yellow again. I didn't get any dents in them though. These shocks have been through the Simpson and surrounds, Cape Yorks and a stack of other places and so far never dented. I think the Bilsteins are pretty thick in the wall so paint chips are about as bad as things have been for me so far. Touch wood.

The pic is of the 6100 buggy shocks which I run on the rears, but I do run GU/GQ rear shocks on the front of my Disco2.

    hehe Ts'cool

Depending on the rates you want, have you looked at the possibilities with OME kit to do a 3" lift.
