thanks guys that was sort how I was leaning, it's nice to get some confirmation that others agree
now to sweet talk SWMBO - she has already agreed that the landy needs money spent on it to keep it 100% reliable.

Blitz, all Rover V8s are backward compatable, so if you buy a short motor , all your accecories will fit.
You have to buy a spacer for the crank.
If you bought a complete second hand motor you are buying a "pig in a poke".
If you get one with all the accessories just remember that they have no dizzy, and the ECU of a 38A will not work in any other car. AFAIK ,you have to buy a new ECU and then you have the problem that the ECU controls all bodily functions and wants signals from doors etc etc before it will start.
The only real answer is to install an aftermarket computer.
So unless you are a "Mac boy" you will be faced with paying someone to t supply and tune the thing. I have been quoted $3000 for this by AFAIR Wolf.
IMHO go the short motor. You will still have to spend extra money on ECU tuning to get the best from it.

what is the spacer for? and where on the crank does it go?
Good points about the complete engine it seems like an easy optioin in theory but I didnt know about all the guano needed to get it going.

The 4.0 /4.6 crank has alonger nose because the oil pump is driven off it, whereas the earlier engines drive the oil pump from the camshaft.
So the front pulley will not do up tight without a spacer behind the pulley to fill the area normally filled by the oil pump drive.
So it goes on the nose.

My short motor arrived with a cam drive sprocket on the crank. Its the same thickness as my spacer. If your motor comes with this sprocket you could just grind the teeth off with a grinder or machine then off if you have access to a lathe. I bought the spacer from Discovery Autos i think it was about $40?
Blitz, I have a late model 4L V8 in my 93 Disco, it has the 93 3.5L timing cover, all the original 93 3.5L belts and pulleys, 93 Dissy and single coil and the 93 3.5L EFI fuel system, and the standard 93 3.5 ECU, you could do the same to a 4L/4.6L with your 94 3.9 bits, works a treat, wont put out as much HP as the 4.6L with all the fancy stuff, but much more reliable and simple to work on, Regards Frank.

I'm going through the same exercise myself.
4.0 V8 on LPG with 180,000 kms on the odometer. A cylinder liner slipped, causing coolant to enter the combustion chamber.
Block is not good anymore so I am fitting a 4.6 in place of the 4.0. The 4.6 block has top hatted sleeves to avoid the liners from slipping again.

Ok this shows how out of touch I am with new landys - the 4 and 4.6 dont have a dizzy but are like the new holden and ford with the separate coil to each cylinder?
So a potentially dumb question, does the block have a blank off cap where the dizzy used to go?

Point 1 - not quite. They share a coil between two cylinders. One gets spark on the compression stroke, the other at the same time on the exhaust stroke - it's called wasted spark. There are 4 coils in the case of the GEMS engine.
2. No. The timing cover is entirely different. The oil pump is part of the case and there is no provision for a dizzie nor is there any need for a dizzie drive from the camshaft. The older timing cover will fit the new engine but you need the camshaft from an older engine as well.
