hmm, the viscous fan is not meant to run at engine speed,, it "unlocks" at a certain rev range,,
basically because its wasted power and not needed for cooling after a certain speed.
the usual way(other than a damaged hose or leak) to lose water is under pressure,,
either heat, or exhaust gases,,
neither of which are any good.
its not cutting in when hot
mayb once i rectify this problem i can move on to find the real source of the problem... but i feel before i do that i need to have the fan working and the only LR dealer/repairer for 1700kms has just closed, and they did most of the work, ie radiator, waterpump etc... so now i start the slow diagnosis ...one step at a time
Can I just clarify something here.
The viscous fan doesnt really 'cut in' its almost live a variable drive thing - as the engine gets hotter the fluid inside the viscous fan then enables the fan to turn, the hotter it gets the faster the fan will turn in theory.
If you are saying that even when the engine is hot your fan is not turning then the viscous coupling is knackered.
Just change it
Be careful about bolting the fan to the hub and locking it. Old fans sometimes have cracks that will get bigger and self destruct when spinning at FULL revs all the time..ask me how I know. I have seen a fan that this was done to , break up and damage lots of radiator and bonett not good. As a temporary measure at low speeds it would be ok though.
Seems to me you have other problems as at speed u dont need the fan running at all as was pointed out above.

I know that my Range rover fan is the same as the ford fan and visc hub assy as that is what I have on at the moment, the only thing was I had to trim the diameter of the blades. I am not sure if the hub is the same as whats on the discovery, If so xf/xd/xa falcon hub from the wreckers may be a cheap alternative. I paid for a new one (ford) $180 for the fan and hub. This was about 8 years ago.
If I am wrong about the model numbers I am sure someone will chirp in!

when it "cut in" before it used to roar, i noticed when it was hot on the trip back from Broome it wasnt making the same sound, i perservered till i got back to Port Hedland and put a screwdriver in the fan and it didnt flick the screwdriver out of the way, it almost stopped, rough i know but effectiveand the temp was up over 3/4 way above where it used to "cut in"Quote:
