    Recent Disco problems and solutions

Im haveing a bit of rant today this is my 2nd new thread. I have had a few anoying problems with my 2002 tD5 series 2 of late. just before christmass while I was away at work my wife called to tell me the disco was overheating.

I sent her off to our very reliable mechanic to check it out $1200 later I have a new radiator and water pump, or do I ? The radiator doesnt look new when I went back to see my mechanic he has closed down and gone out of buisness. Bugger !! but its not overheating so I guess I just contributed to his superanuation fund.

Next problem wife calls again the electric drivers window won't wind up. She calls local dealer as she is aware local mechanic is missing presumed on the run with my $1200 bucks.

Local dealer tells her over the phone that its the regulator very common he says they do it all the time $298 for the part and $200 to fit it.

I shop around and find an after market regulator for $100 bucks that will do I says and drive off to pick it up.

Now I am thinking that a regulator is a tiny piece of electrical gagetry like a relay but I am very wrong a regulator is the complete mechanism with gears etc that winds the window up and down assisted by an electric motor.

I arrive at the discount parts place and shown a very cheap and nasty looking part probably made in India and it doesnt have a motor thats an extra $200 bucks.

I left it at the shop went home pulled my motor out gave it a good bang with a hammer and it now works as good as new except for a bit of extra noise.

If it plays up again I will pull the motor out of the rearwindow and swap them over.

Another annoying problem is that the TC ,Hill decent, and ABS lights have come on again.

This happend a few months back and I fitted a new sensor to the left rear apparently the right rear got jealous and now wants a new sensor as well a new sensor costs around $212 and I will now have to fit it myself due to the forementioned absence of my mechanic.

Once fitted I then have to pay someone with a diagnostic computer $75 cash in the hand to reset the gismo that turns off the warning lights.

The joys of owning a landrover, but its not all bad my brother has a 2001 l'cruiser troopy and he bags me about the disco's reliability. Well he used to untill he recently had to replace a rear diff, gearbox and t/fer case and hes only done a few more k's than me.

Mike that is a lovely story
Pity you didn't post it under "Discovery".
Then all those with D2's know what to look forward to.

I am so pleased, Murray Sanderson talked me into buying a S1, for a few of the reasons you wrote above.

Mate, wait until the D3 is 10 years old. It will have far more problems than yours

What amuses me, is LR continue to manufacture more electric quirky crap into every new model made!
It will make them VERY unattractive to the $$ less buggers like me, that have to buy old ones.

I guess I'll just have to keep my "KISS" Disco going...

    Cheers

Ok, quite interested before but very interested now, same warning lights have lit up on my D2. How did you diagnose it was a wheel sensor and not a million other possibilities?

oh and ps, my sympathies with the other stuff. Its only money and the car has cost you more than that in depreciation over the same period. Its all about perspective.. or ignorance. I try not to worry about the cost otherwise I can't justify my toy to the boss.

Talking ABS Warning Lights - follow up

My "3 Amigos" have left the building!

I cannot say exactly what fixed it, could be me fiddling and cleaning all connections to Wheel Speed Sensor Cables, SLABS, ABS Modulator, Brake Reservoir level and hosing out all possible mud and dust everywhere.

Or could be my mechanic for replacing and bleeding the brake fluid. Or could be the dude with the diagnosis software (diagnosed the fault had come from the rear L/H Wheel Sensor and re-set the Fault Codes).

Anyway, all up about 3 hrs of my time and $180 for the mechanic. The HDC works just as before so I'd assume the ABS and TC would also be fine.

Pretty happy with all that! Hope they don't return anytime soon.

I like you Simon you must be rich ( its only money)

To answer your question how I knew it was the wheel sensor ? I plugged it into a diagnostic computer that told me it was an intermitent fault right rear wheel sensor. I then set it back to normal removing the warning lights but within a few days they came on again.
