    Injector pump leak

    Hi guys and girls.

Over the last couple of weeks i have noticed a small amount of diesel leaking from my injector pump (300Tdi Disco). It only seems to do it on the first start up of the day when its cold, if it leeks a small amount when driving its not noticeable. I have looked around the pump and its coming from the top of the pump around the spring on the throttle linkage area. There are no pipe or anything nearby, or above this area that could be leaking. Is there an o-ring or seal under the spring or something? I didnt want to start pulling stuff appart until i had an idea of what i was looking for. Matt

what do you mean did one? Did you overhaul it?

Anyone have any idea what the cost would be to have one done by a diesel specialist?

on the spindle that the trottle linkage attaches to there is an o-ring these some times go hard and weep ,leave well enough alone ,on another thread recently i think figures greater than 1k were mentioned for a complete rejig o a bosh pump.

When I had injector pump troubles the second problem was a leak from the pump. Mechanic said a new seal would be about $30. Was told about $1200-1500 to rebuild pump, don't know if that was in and out, or just rebuilt.

    Cheers

This is the first sign of the end of the injector pump. Sorry - it's inevitable. Mine did it first about 2 years ago (300k). Just a small amount of fuel leaking from the throttle shaft. It 'went away' after about a week so I was much relieved. It started again about 6 months ago (390k) but worse - a constant drip drip drip when the engine was running. I took it to a diesel injector pump specialist who knew exactly what was going on. The bush around the throttle shaft is brass and just wears out so it leaks. He advised, considering the mileage done that a rebuild was in order .... $1600. Another symptom that was developing in the last days before the rebuild was a sudden momentary stalling of the engine. It is the injector pump vanes bypassing the fuel rather than pushing it thru the injector. Just like a misfire because the fuel is not sent inot the cylinder for that stroke.
It took about three days to get it done and the engine runs sooo smoothly again (well as smooth as a 300tdi can get).
Bio diesel makes the problem worse because it cleans any sludge that might be helping the seals and it also causes the seals to shrink slightly. The rebuilt pump has better seals and can work with normal diesel or bio-diesel. Mind you the mechanic said NEVER use biodiesel.
I went to RANKIN DIESEL in bayswater - excellent service and workmanship. (sorry ACE, just read that you are in Lithgow ... Bayswater is a bit of a drive). There was is also a mob that sell fully reco'd pumps for $1400 but it is a changeover service, so you need someone to remove yours to send to them and then fit the 'new' one)

ok, so how long is this likely to give me before replacement is unavoidable?

looks like i need to start saving then. We have Katoomba fuel injection here who are quite good. So i might give them a call and see if a rebuild is cheaper than exchange.

Has anyone else done a rebuild themselves? Or are they full of finicky buts and pieces that if done wrong create problems?

i am happy to remove the pump and have someone else rebuild it to save the cash, so i might be able to get it done cheaper. Time for some homework i think. I have a bit before it definitely has to be replaced.
