Poor maintenance causing hose failure. Often the small one behind the turbo. Top radiator hose is another common one.
Also big spring clamps that loose tension allowing the connection to leak, along with a dealer that wouldn't (whilst still under warranty) forcefully remove the engine cover due to an errant nut so that the source of fluid loss couldn't be found, with the end result an overheated (and eventually destroyed) head on too many occasions. I notice that dealership has recently lost or declined the LR marque.

Trust me, if you haven't done one, the tension is tight, tight, f...n tight .
AFAIK there is no Nm figure for the head.

Ok.....so the proceedure to torque the head down and its on the lines of 180 deg. of this, 90 deg of that and it will not correlate to a Nm figure?

Is it because we use stretch bolts and it would be impossible to get a satisfactory Nm figure? And because of this the danger is snapping a bolt?

Hi all , I think TombRadier is on the money, Looking back over the last year Ive had two hose's fail . first one was a hole rubbed through by the power stearing hose, top hose going down. Second came from the little one under the terbo. But after that I did two trips to WA. and one to NQ. I live in Mildura. All with a 20 van and boat on top. Im sure that over heating started my problem. And changing that LITTLE one under the terbo is a must every 18 months. Its so had to see, I hope this has helped some one ...I see they have a plastic spreader on the hose between the power stearing and top hose now...Over heating must change the tension in the bolts ..the td5"s are a Hi tec engine and running right on the edge, so any quick change in temp must have a big afect on every thing...This is my first land rover that I was not game enough to fix..and I have had a few...plus Im getting on a little...Mabey Im getting wiser?? Good luck!! robert42

I think using stretch bolts does mean that it is not possible to get a reliable Nm figure for the final tension.
Also, torquing by degrees helps to eliminate tension variance caused by friction (under the head of the bolt or in the thread).
The initial low torque figure can be reliably achieved as a base line for all bolts to work from.

It keeps coming back to the same thing doesn't it over heat a TD5 and big $$$, what's worse is a TD5 is a little engine that is capable of punching way above its weight so heaps of people use them for towing, which seems to be one of the main problems here.

It's seems Td5's that constantly tow heavy loads horse floats and big vans all the time ( I not talking about an off road trailer every month or so ) will eventually develop head problems.

Hi All, well she back on the road and sounds good, update on the head, had a crack test and it was ok had a hardness test 99.8 .. Had a 5 thou skim done and relook at hardness, 97.00, well with in the safe rang. went back smooth as ... One thing ...was flushing the system out before new coolant, had the bleed screw out from the top hose, water came out till it was clear as. went to put screw back .... no thread.. bum , the plastic insert went in and ?? hopefuly it went in the rad. side. lucky I had a new top hose to fit.. Dont know how I would have blocked it up if it happened on the side of the road..
Be careful if you are bleeding air off and you take the bleed screw out . I put it down to the hose's being streched ? when the head was leaking..Cost all up new water pump and top hose. mates rates 2900 so I smile a bit.. Thanks to all that gave info and to this forum for it's help. now to the west again gold prospecting..fingers xed...

Hi phillwilde, Iv'e also read that but the chap that did my head also said your not surpose to do that to a lot of allm. heads but they do.. ie mercs, and bmw, ect. as long as you dont have the head shaved .. a skim is just that a skim. and it has to be checked each pass for hardness. if you go passed the bottom number of 80 it curtains.. now all this was told to me before the job went a head. I asked at the bmw , place they asked who was going to do it . when I told them, fine he knows what's what. as he dose our's.. that's all I can say.I wouldn't just take my head into anyone and say plain this for me please. That would be a BIG mistake...AND the chap that did my job stayed there and WATCHED...while it was done, carnt be to careful he said....
All this is what Iv'e been told....some people's word I take and this guy is one of them..he's been at it a while....it was losing that bit from the top hose that gave me the sh...ts...robert42
