Up date on TD5 headgasket change

TD5 heads have a hard anodised coating for durability. Any skimming would remove it. That is why they say not to skim them.
The old VM was similar. Land Rover added the anodised coating to the spec. compared to the original marine spec.
There are places in Australia that do hard anodised coatings, but I have never needed to investigate .
Who knows what the loss in durability would be?

big reds been pretty good to me and she hasnt had a gentle life but she does get good attention come servicing time Ive towed 3+t on more than a few occasions and when Im going anywhere I usually have about 1.5t of tandem and load on board and thats not normally for short trips either. But then I dont wind it up and push hard at the speed limits. No engine is going to last long if you ask 100% of it 100% of the time. (well maybe the series engines and the tdis)

I have a low collant alarm so are you saying if this either goes off or I notice the level dropping regularly, that I may have a head gasket problem so change it? Just checking to make sure I don't miss any warning signs;)

I would not say that. Just check why you are losing coolant. It could be many other things aother than a head gasket, but keep that in the back of your mind if you can not find anything else. It will also depend on how much coolant you are using and any other symptoms.
You will always use some coolant due to the nature of its use, same as oil, but if it is what you would call excessive then investigation is needed.

Thanks Craig, not loosing any coolant just now but just asking the question in case it was a head gasket early warning sign. Thanks for the input, Mick

Update: Turns out it is my head gasket needing replaced. Have posted elsewhere but as mention already, if you are loosing coolant and can;t find an obvious reason, get the head gasket checked/changed. Also getting slight hydraulicing which I am hoping has not caused any damage but will find out in a couple of weeks when the head comes off:(
