Very pleased with the Disco 1 after 5 or 6 years; easy to work on and so much more fun to drive than a Cruiser :D
Main weakness seems to be the lack of longevity in some electrical bits and the price of them - new ignition switch when it was 10 years old; new light switch when it was 11; but I guess I am a dinosaur who can remember when cars had electrical bits that were built to last :(
many many parts that are replacements (eg like the above mentioned disco ignition switch) can actually be rebuilt to new or better than if you've got the time and interestQuote:

It's only issue that cheeses me off is the ongoing problem of the clutch master & slave cylinders but the seem to self rectify most of the time anyway and have never stranded me.
Who cares about reliability, its the ride and the looks we are after..If its reliability I wanted I would get a mack truck. Only jokin ,this was my first let down ever. And I could have driven home as it was but would have done a little more damage.. ie TD5 Head gasket..Have had ser 1, pulled a 16ft carapark van with her, a long way , shot roos in wa with it , at one stage on 3 cycl. but still went forwards. Ser2 never stopped. sold the ser 1. in Melb. 3years later in the out back she pulled up at the camp ,nealy cried. She looked as good as new. They just never stop.With the td5 when the head was off still had machine marks in the bore.. not run in yet..Had a small fright saw marks in the bore where the valves go , they must cut away the top of the bore to let the valves pass. Phew ....Just love them and they will love you back...robert42..
Over the years I have never walked home or been rescued because of a failure in a Rover.
I have had to be rescued in other brands; with Rovers it is generally the stupid little things that are not right and a continual annoyance.
The old Toyotas were less labour intensive to keep moving but no where near as capable, the modern ones I won’t even comment on.
My Land Rover is 28 years old and I would trust it implicitly to do anything but I am cautious and carry most parts to deal with whatever happens.
I guess you are always on your guard with a Rover as someone said to me back in the 1980s you have some of the best engineering in the world and some of the worst engineering in the world all within the same vehicle
Put simply if they built them with the care that they were designed with you would have the BEST.
