    2.4 VM Diesel

    Hey Fellas,

I have a 88 RRC with a 2.4 VM Diesel, however the engine is giving all sorts of grief.

When we first bought it the bloody thing blew up on the back to Glady, requiring a full rebuild.
After finally figuring out how to get the heads stuck down properly (not as easy as it sounds 4 separate heads and no locating studs) we have had continual water leaks.
The water leak is mainly coming from between nos 1 and 2 head.

I have pressure tested the heads and the core plugs do not leak.
The head gasket (the last 3 times we pulled it) was not blown nor showed any signs of leakage.
The water manifold is not leaking water.

The next step is to replace the liners, but that is something I really do not want to do. Are there any other silly gits out there who have had any experience with this f@#*&%g motor? or any constructive suggestions (throw it away is NOT constructive)?

P.S. when it is going it is a great car, and goes a lot faster than me Perkins powered S3 and its got air con AND a radio (how fancy).

    Thanks

    Josh

Maybe a hard pill to swallow but it probably is constructive the VM motors were known for these problems in Range Rovers I have never read about anyone solving the issues.
Oddly they actually had a good reputation as boat motors though.

recycle it ;they may make a good marine lump but that engine and the turbo version fitted to a j**p were disasterous for all the problems you have mentioned and more; definitely fit a tdi ,might be as well trying to get a disco to break as if the grey cells dont fail me I think the gear box will also need to be replaced,I vaguely recall a problem with the bell housing and input shaft.Another idea would be to use a jap engine and adaptor plate or the "International" tdi lump

Get a later 2.5 ltr from a jeep, they are much more reliable and pretty much fixed the overheating head cracking problems.

My VM had been overheated before I got it, and lots of threads would no longer take recommended torques etc so used helicoils on injector bolts etc.

I replaced my VM with a Tdi300, seemed to have similar performance, and has not let me down in the two years since the install.

The removed VM has been doing very nicely since, driving a 3" water pump at 2000 rpm.

also there is a yahoo group on VMs so may be worth a try.

When you say water is leaking out,are you running water or coolant?.I'm only asking as if you are running water and there is no leaks from any of the joints, have you checked to see if there is a hole corroded through the block that looks like it could be a liner problem?.You can buy complete rear ended disco's from the auctions and change the running gear over. You would make most of the money back in selling what you don't need, including the VM to a boat owner who wants a re-power.Don't take offence to my first post, look in the english sites and they change all the early td's with TDi's as most of them including petrol ones and all the Jap stuff is pretty ordinary. It took a while for car makers to develope reliable turbo engines.
