Converting a Diesel to LPG

I'm sure I heard about LPG conversions to diesels where they kept the engine as-is, but screwed the injection right back, so only 1-2L/100 of diesel was used, and the vehicle mainly ran on LPG - but maybe I am wrong...???

IIRC some Linde forklifts have the same bottom end whether diesel or LPG, all sounds very landrover doesn't it, (I can't remember what engine it is maybe a small perkins). They run about 17.5 because I'm told in europe it seems they don't mess about with petrol, it's either diesel, LPG or CNG.

my old ex-JRA engineer mate was doing this.
Mark was using a Terrier block/bottom end, two Bosch VE 4cyl pumps and Land Rover Tdi pistons just slot straight in.
Can't remember what he was going to do re rods, probably custom.

Interesting little exercise that was never finished.

isn't the Sydney bus fleet diesel converted to CNG ??

Interesting that some of them don't meet euro I, even the old 4BD1's met Euro I.

I have a Terrano 1 in my front yard at the moment that I am selling on behalf of a mate. Usually it runs pretty clean, however you should see the smoke it blows if you try and drive up a hill on part-throttle. If you put the boot in and get the turbo spinning the smoke goes away (it is an auto).

Landrover did try to convert the 3.5 v8 in to a oil burner, project Ice Berg. A little to mad for mass prodution.

Wasn't there also a perkins v8 diesel experiment somewhere in there?

it is common in the forklift game on older forklifts to find diesels converted to lpg
Some spacers are spun on a lathe and spark plugs are fitted instead of injectors in the head.
The pistons are removed and the pistons machined to remove the injector bowl and to lower compression( in a lathe again)
A distributor is fitted where the injector pump goes.
Linde forklift in smaller sizes use a Volkswagon diesel/lpg motor.
Ford Thames diesels are a easy conversion.
Perkins were advailible ex factory converted as above for forklifts.
