Looks like its a drain hole from factory![]()
Hey Everyone i was Cleaning my Defender (1999 Td5) and noticed on the bottom side of the bellhousing just where it bolts on the motor next to the Gearbox drain plug that there is a hole i dunno if its supposed to be there. i gave the Fender a long drive yesterday and nothing seem out of the ordinary but the only way the hole could have been made would be off road (which i haven't done in a while). so i must have been driving with this for a while and nothing seems wrong. Could someone tell my if there is supposed to be a square hole next to the drain plug on the bellhousing.
( i dunno what the gearbox is called i can never remember, its just the standard 5 speed)
Thanks in advance, Sorry the pic is bad quality the camera flash was making is blury

If its that little oblong hole i would say its used to prise apart the bellhousing from the block ( tool insert ) ?

No leak and it's clean.
You've got a problem.
Cheers

The only problem I can see Adrian is that the underside of your engine looks unnaturally CLEAN. "...Go and get some mud on it immediately son!!!!"

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
The 'drain plug' on the bell housing should be removed. It's a wading plug, and you put it in for water crossings. I normally fit it the day of a drive and remove it at the end of the day.
If you should suffer a rear main oil leak, the hole allows oil to drain out before it contaminates your clutch.
Make sure you keep the wading plug in a handy spot (glovebox). There's also a wading plug at the bottom of the timing cover (on a 300Tdi - but not sure about the TD5), so check in case you need to get yourself a 2nd one too.
Looks nice and clean. If the rear main seal goes, you'll see engine oil weeping out of it.
Thanks very much everyone the reason i thought i might have damaged it was it looked like somehting had been ripped off, around the hole was really rough. Thanks again
