apparently pushing them along in fifth puts a lot of strain on that gear......
now add a chip and a trailer........
and you will soon understand why......its only a matter of time.....
mine will probably do the same soon......
how hard is it to strip the box down yourself and see whats actually wrong with it......?
it may be simple to fix........or it may be a right royal pain........
Honestly, if it were me I would drop the box out and have a good look at it. If it is only 5th would replace that and the bearings and all should be good.But worth a thorough inspection. I would hate you to replace 5th only to find that was not the only problem.
These boxes are renowned for having 5th gear and 5th gear bearings fail, same as Mitsubishi's.
I had the same in Pajero some years ago and it was in fact the bearing not the 5th gear itself. The Mitsi boxes are very similar to the Rovers as far as bearing set up goes.
It was a while ago but parts where the cheapest component. About $600 for bearings and a new clutch plus labour. As it was friend who did it all the parts were at trade.
As afriend of mine who is a fitter / diesel mechanic once said to me "At the end of the day they are only a box of cogs and bearings with a few shims", back when I was worried about takling the R380 in my RRC.Quote:

It's going up on stands to determin where the noise is exactly coming from.

I know of an R380 behind a TD5 (not chipped) that has had the hardening start to let go on the input shaft and lay shaft gears. (small pits)
Only about 100,000km and used Castrol Syntrans, but has been used towing in [i]very[i] high ambients. (NT)
btw, TRS had a new R380 advertised for $3400, but don't know what it suited.

The clutch will slip sometimes if worked hard, but only on take off, this is normally if i have to stop at lights and it's a steep uphill grade, it has been like this since 71,000ks when we bought it (the previous owner must have been hard on it) i have basicly nursed it for 90,000ks, i have also treated the gearbox well too by not letting the car venture outside it's torque range, anytime it drops below 2000rpm i go back a gear and i don't bury the boot when i do.
I'm thinking that something in the clutch has let go, just hope the flywheel is OK.
