I thought the same applied in NSW but one sees a heck of a lot of HiLux traybacks around with no rear mudguards let alone mud flaps.

When my daughter was in Derby she was told to be careful about driving the Disco out onto the "mudflaps" after the tide went out.

Yes, you should be off the mudflaps before the tide starts coming in!

Interesting question - With the standard body mudflaps were optional until the standard requiring them was introduced. Not sure when this was, but probably late Series 3 production.

Certainly I do not remember ever seeing a mud flap on a new Series 1 or 2/2a.

I rather doubt the standard requiring mudflaps was ever made retrospective - very few standards ever have been. Mind you, there could be problems convincing a policeman of this! But I suspect that you are very unlikely to be booked for it unless you have done something to draw attention to yourself. As Diana has pointed out, missing mudflaps are very common, even where the vehicle had them to start with.

Hi Mick,
For a Roadworthy you get two bites at the cherry. First inspection and if anything is not up to scratch, fix it and submit to second inspection. The fee covers both.
Cheap rubber matting from the hardware store will do. Or I've got some proper mudflaps you can borrow to get registered. (they fall off after that)

well looking at my old girl i can't find any holes or marks where there has been mud flaps . so if it didn't come with them will i still need to put them on ?

What he said. WA seems to be stricter, but AFAIK the rule is in all states. Before I got the IIA to Perth, (driving from Brisbane) I got stopped at an RBT and told I needed to fit mudflaps. Must come to within 30cm of ground or closer.

ADR 15.2.5 states that: Notwithstanding the requirements specified above (groups of axles) the wheel gaurd including a mud flap (if fitted) need not be less than 230mm from the ground for other than off- road vehicles, or 300mm in the case of vehicles designed for off- road operation.

Be interesting to know when that came in and if my IIA is exempt.
