Usefull info. The guy who is going to rebuild my clutch pack is a BMW ZF mechanic who now works free lance. He has 6 ZF boxes from various BMW's sitting around so I might have a chat when it gets pulled down. My box runs at or below 100 deg farenheight at speed but in stop start traffic or big hills will hit 220 with ease. I was told to panic around 250 deg farenheight.
I am fitting a bigger cooler and new temp sensors this time so I know what it's realy doing. Mechanic thinks my 3000rpm torque converter was the biggest mistake the previous people had done.

Slunnie I will dig up the info.

Halley, thank you so much for that information and the contacts. It seems like BMW have also gone to a lot of effort to toughen up this box, and it's interesting they chose to do this rather than use a different box. Or, I wonder if the modifications are part of that which is in the 24 box???

Edd, thank you for looking up that info aswell. I appreciate it.
    Cheers

My last replacement box was a beefed up BMW one. The clutch plates have started to disintergrate - and I might add not from even heavy work.

I love the car but I am sick to death of the autos not holding up and the lack luster performance of the engine given the fuel economy.

So I am biting the bullet and looking at an engine auto heart transplant, I am currently getting prices for a LS6 (6Lt chev aluminium V8) and a 4L80E GM auto box to go behind it.

the 6L80E would be a better box as it is a six speed but no adapter plate is made for it to go to the landy transfer case and cost is prohibitive.

Aditional changes will be 4.1 Ashcroft crown wheel and pinion and upgraded axles.

looks like I can get the engine and box (crate) for under 10k about a grand for the adapter landed in Darwin

I am currently talking to auto experts as to what would be the best box standard or up to which strengthened unit.

This may sound like an expensive exersize for a 94 year disco but it is vastly cheaper than a new vehicle

    ZF auto

Hey Guy's i'm glad I could help when I did my conversion everyone told me to go with a t700 box but they weigh a ton and i would have to get adaptor plates as well as custom made drive shafts my car was built for comp work so I opted it to be as light as possible and if I was to brake something it could be easly sorced (and quick delievery)as 95% of my car is genuine landrover I run 36" tyres and still use the defender gearing people have also told me that low range in an auto is no good but with that 30% lower first gear (I dont know the exact ratio)it's nearly as slow as when my defender had the 300tdi manual in it

OK These are the guys who beefed up my box.

I now have the clutch pack out and yep you can see that half of it is burnt but the other half isn't. Guess that means that 1st is not engaging. I will be dropping of the pack this week and hope to have mine back in over the weekend.
Also hoping to find out if it's a standard pack or not.

Thanks for this George! I'm also just waiting to hear back from Bruce Davis who is checking out the mods, particularly in relation to the 4HP22EH.

Good luck. Now I have mine all apart I will be dropping the lines off to have the cooler's hoses modded to match. The new setup should hold an extra 500 1 litre of fluid.

That'll be really good. With the additional cooler I don't have any temp issues at all. They absolutely 100% have to be high pressure fittings though, don't let them just do a bit of hose over a flared tube.

Interesting stuff, I got a mate building one as we speak, he recoed one and it lasted approx. 30.oooklm's so his done his research, got schematics of the valve body, clearance measurements and is building a tough blueprinted one, well see if it lasts the tests of time

Oh by the way, its behind a tough assed 383, that's why it croaked
