Update on my D2 5TH gear prob

Hi Baz,

I've had this issue a couple of times.

The replacement oil pump will look different to the original, so there was a re-design somewhere along the way.

Causes? Not sure. Not everyone knows that it has a pump, so I suspect with mine the wrong oil went in one service. That wouldn't help.

I've heard two versions - (a) that the 5th bearings fail coz they are the furthest from the pump & (b) when the bearings fail the shrapnel takes out the pump. Either way its not good.

Scouse might jump in here, but I think D2s are more prone. Tighter clearances around the trans tunnel, less airflow.

Fingers crossed, mines been ok since the last rebuild.

Disco is all done, it was the oil pump, 5TH gear is in good nick no bearing failure, there was however the support bearings in 2nd & 3rd were on the way out, this was causing the stiff gear change.

Clutch was done, flywheel was in good nick so only a clutch kit needed, i figured i'd get the clutch done while the box was out and also an oil leak in the transfer case was fixed too under warrenty.

So she back on the road this arvo:thumbsup::burnrubber:

To be honest, it's only Max & Baz that I've heard have this problem.
We don't see a lot of cars here once they run out of warranty for some reason ;).

I have heard of the heat build up around the D2 transmission though. A LR service manager friend of mine plans on doing a small body lift on his D2 for this very reason (he does a lot of towing).

A TD5 Defender 130 in the Territory has had the case hardening start to fail on the input shaft and cluster gears.
I've only seen the pics, I think Big Jon has seen the gears and I suspect overheating/oil getting too thin (towing in 46*= ambient) is the cause.
This particular box used Sytntrans, too, which should better at high temps than MTF94.
FWIW, I've lagged the exhaust all the way to the t/case which will hopefully help. (pinched the idea from Inc)

When we did the Simpson in 2005, we had the transmission temp light come on in the desert, a combination of slow going and clay build up under the car i think was the cause of this, it had rained when we were there so all of the clay pans were mud, which made for some interesting driving with the camper on:eek:.

I have only ever put MTF94 or an equivelent oil in the box and it has always been changed at intervals from 7,000ks to 15,000ks.

We do alot of towing, well all the time really and it does get a hard time when we play too:D

I was told the 130 has a stronger transfercase, is this true, the reason i ask is, the gearbox guy recommended going for the Defender transfer case rather than 4.11s reduction gears in the Disco, he reckons it will reduce the low range ratio and improve the high range torque giving me better ratios with the 32s or 33s.

t/case is identical, just different high range between the two (1.41:1 in a Defender). Low range is the same ratio.
The only way to change low range is use the Maxi low range gears, somone posted the other day that MR in Brisvegas are going into production with those since maxi has closed, or the rather exxy (landed here) Ashcroft underdrive that bolts onto the back of the t/case

btw, it'd be interesting to know at what temperature the g/box temp sensor switches at.
The gearbox oil t/stat starts to open at 87*, or at least the one I bought does. ('97-'98 300Tdi's don't have the oil cooler, I suspect LR thought that MTF 94 would be sufficient in high temps compared to an ATF....)

I was refering to changing the front and rear Diff ratio with 4.11s too compensate for larger tyres, his idea of changing to the Defender T/C instead was that it is already geared for 32s and this would benifit the Disco with low range being lower for offroad and high range giving us standard gearing for on road towing.

The price is about the same between the two mods of around $1100.

Does 94 stand for it's viscosity, cause it doesn't look or feel that thick.

but a Defender t/case doesn't alter low range at all, just high range.
I reckon going 4.11 is better, as you'll gain an effective lower low range too.
