Update on my D2 5TH gear prob

Went in to be inspected, came out with nothing found, seems it couldn't be diagnosed.

The mechanic doesn't seem to think it's the gearbox, even though it sounds like it's coming from that area.

Something to do with the noise it's making, no growl but a dry uni type noise, so off to the gearbox/diff guy to see if he can determin what it is.

One other thing is that if you put it in 5TH and your backing off down hill (ie) not under load, it doesn't make any noise, but as soon as you start to excellerate it makes the noise, even the slightest touch of the pedal it will do it.

It's really frustrating because it only makes this noise in 5TH gear and it happens at any speed slow or fast and only stops if you back off or go to 4TH.

hrmmmm. wonder if its not a failing rear support bearing on the output shaft......

that could do it in theory.

Mines a manual and does make that noise. I share your frustration though...I hate it when I cant identify a noise! Your know its something grinding and wearing away but just cant locate it! grrr!

    Well problem solved

Seems it was the pump in the gearbox that has failed and because it's near 5TH gear, it's making a noise, the Disco is OK to drive as long as i don't use 5TH

It goes in Monday for repairs.

Hi Id like to hear the outcome of this. Im no gearbox expert but seems to me the oil pump would have to work under power only and only in fifth for this to be the case. I thought the pump worked whenever the shafts were turning not just in fifth?
Hope the problem is found in any case.

Seems to me that if the pump has failed then 5th gear's bearings must fare worse that others without oil pressure. I'm surprised you've been advised that its OK to drive at all with no oil being pumped.

what sort of noise is it ? I too get a ticking noise in 5th and somtimes in 4th. I wondered if it could be the pump. Does much as you have already described.
It does fade away after a long drive, sometimes. But it does'nt seem to be getting any worse.

I thought the same, and i still can't understand why it would only happen in 5TH, he did seem to diognose it straight away as soon as he heard the noise though.

The gear change is a bit stiff as well so when he strips it, all will be revealed i guess.
