What oil!!!!

Yes but why do they recommend it NOW?
There is probably a good reason that could be gleaned by a phone call to their tech help section.
I can tell you that the current recommendation has changed from last time several years ago especially the diesel bit. Left field that one.
I always used 20-50 engine oil.

It was the Castrol technical help line that recommended Syntrans to me for the main box and VMX80 for the transfer. Expensive but worth it in my opinion. Couldn't believe the difference just a change of oils to Syntrans made. Quieter and slicker shifting.

Syntrans isnt expensive, Gear300 is expensive :twisted:

A synthetic gear oil is basically the way to go these days. I found this to be the solution for Toymota 75# recon crunch boxes i sell that used to fry normal gear oil no matter how thick. As it is synthetic, it will flow easier than a mineral oil, has a much much higher resistance to shear, and is stable at higher temps than mineral oil. Same thing goes with engine oils.
The only thing you need to watch is with synchros. if the oil is too thick, you will crunch gears at cold temps.
Price wise it is more expensive but is $20 not spent worth $2000 - $3000 for a new box??

I use dexron if its going to be doing a lot of light highway running (it seems to deal with the heat better) and the engine oil if its going to be working.

I find this thread interesting I went to VMX 80 on the advice of this forum but noted that in time the box became noisier than I thought it should be.
So I rang Castrol and the guy was adamant that VMX 80 was too thin (his words dont crucify me) for an LT 95.
Quite frankly I was confused and went to Mobil 1 and it seems to be just as bad but I will put up with it.

as I said above, a 15w-40 engine oil is equivalent to most 75w-90 manual trans oils.
Both are approx 14-15.5 cSt@ 100*C

A 75w-80/85 is approx equal to a 10W-30 engine oil.
