Brakes on D1 - can anyone lock their tyres up at 60kph

The question is, what pads are fitted? I had problems with the brakes on my County, I was using Bendix "offroad" pads using Kevlar and alluminium and who knows what else, but despite having a good pedal and reasonable performance they lacked Bite under hard braking (scary with a full load and an unbraked trailer!) I ended up obtaining some "original" pads which improved things no end

I had a 94 v8 D1 which was impossible to lock. Same thing, nice braking, but lots of legwork. The 98 D1 tdi that we have now has the most sensitive brakes i have driven with. The weight of your foot will put your face into the steering wheel. Both set up the same in terms of pads ,tyres etc.

So that can only suggest that yes, they should be able to lock em up if well maintained.

The kit I was quoted on is just the filter, and maybe something else. As far as I understand, it won't fix leaks.

ozscott, I can't remember where I got mine, but it was a lot cheaper than 400, around 180 I think Try british auto spares in Melb or there is a place just outside Ballarat that are really good, I'm sure some others here will know their name, they post australia wide and for me have always been extremly well priced. Let us know how you get on.

My D1's brakes are woeful, and I can't work out why, there are no leaks.

That's the place Pawl, I guess the D1's use a different booster to the defenders, I didn't think about it, they probably have a dual system like the RR's? I would say it's pretty safe to assume the problem is either the Vac pump or booster as any other problem is unlikely to affect all wheels at once (eg. oil or something on the pads) I suppose a brake speciallist would have a pressure gauge and vac gauge?
