    Turbo LAG on the autos!!!

Today was the first rather hot day (it hit 33.4 at Monash) that I've driven the Disco. Naturally the airconditioning was receiving a flogging after 4 hrs parked in the sun, which I know doesn't help with all that hot air passing over the intercooler.

The lag pulling off the line though, compared to previous Tdi manual models, was s***house. It was fine once it hit about 1900 rpm [when it finally got there]. Apart from giving it a little bit of CW action on the stop screw, is there any other way to lessen the lag?

Strap a JATO to the roof!!!!
Check that full loud on the pedal is full loud on the pump.Cables do stretch.
Get somebody to hold the pedal flat and see if its opening the pump fully. That last little bit is the difference between the turtle and the hare on a small diesel pulling a heavy load.
    Goodluck.

I don't have an auto - but I always thought they would be better dealing with the turbo lag than manuals.
The stop screw tweak up should help, as will a free flowing centre muffler. ( eg hotdog ).
But first of all, check the throttle cable adjustment, as said above.

Having had both as a fair comparison, the auto has nil turbo lag once moving compared to the manual... its just the idle - 1800 rpm from stationery... after all its pulling a rather high 1st gear ratio of 2.480:1. By contrast the manual is 3.692:1 in first.

Even a commodore with less weight and a V6 or V8 motor has a 1st gear ratio of 3.059, so the Tdi does have its work cut out in a heavy 4wd - she's doing pretty good.

    Will check those things!

Did you give it enough CW on the stop screw. 1 1/2 turns got rid of my excessive lag, even with the A/C going. But I also rotated the diaphram and adjusted the spring under the diaphram too, which helps as boost builds.

Torque converters negate the gearng difference...

    Bombodore is 3.059 to a 3.08:1 diff....

Bit different to 2.48 to 3.54:1
