    GKN Overdrive

    Did a search, found little.
Anyone got a GKN overdrive on their fender?
If it was to cost $2400 landed is it worth the money. I like the idea of the OD but also being able to split 3 - 4 and 4 - 5 would be real handy too... noise reduction wouldnt hurt also

It would of course put end to my thoughts of a central mounted PTO winch bolted to the cross member behind the dual cab with plasma running aft and then doubled back to the front bar.

I must be getting bored looking for projects?

I liked the overdrive I had in my RRC - but that was a 4 speed. I can understand if the Defender is a little tense on the freeway with the 1.44 TC, and unless you plan to tow a big trailer perhaps a Disco TC (1.22) might be a better idea.

Then you can relieve this Tasmanian gentleman of his LT230 PTO and winch

land rover 110 PTO winch - eBay, Other Car Parts, Accessories, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 11-Mar-08 22:53:41 AEDST)

and you might be able to shoehorn it in underneath and voila!

Thanks for the link very tempting...
I never liked the turbo lag on my old disco with 1.2 TC when pulling away from a start, when we go away the fender has a few things in the tray and boat on the back... i would hate it even more!!! I guess can always use low range to get moving?

I'm a little confused about the whole Defender overdrive thing, having come from a SII-SIII background, since I have had my defenders I havn't felf that they need an overdrive, my TDi300 sat on 110 all day in 40 degree heat and was happy, and a hell of a lot quieter than the series ones. Our current TD5 sounds like its idling (at2500) at 100, how fast do you guys drive your defenders?
don't they both govern at about 4000/4500?
they are both relativly modern engines and I recon they aren't any good at 1800 as maybe the izuzu probably is (but how would I know).

    Whoops!
I forgot there are v8's out there!!!!!

GKN have stopped production of their Over drive unit and if you buy one now, good luck getting parts as they are being bought up by people who have GKN's.

I never liked the GKN and has a poor record. The leaks, electrical failures and poor support from GKN turned me away from their stuff. The Rocky Mountain over drive is a far superiour unit. There is also another OD manufacturer in UK, meant to be the best OD out there and prices accordingly. They made OD's for many big manufacturers.

    Overdrive

I have a Gkn fitted to my 95 130. I am very happy with it. 3 or 4 years its been on now,, had to have a rebuild as didn't change the oil often enough. All fine now thanks to Bruce Davis. Cruise the highway at speed limit at 2000 revs . Much quieter to drive temptation to over use it around town Great for accelerating in third , dont take your foot off the power and just flick the switch, surprises a few people.
Also running an LPG fumed engine and upgraded turbo and intercooler.
Back to the Gkn the oil reservoir is too small on long hard runs in the heat through hills it overheats and starts to slip or not change in. I think there is someone at Bruce Davis developing an external reservoir for them.
