Tuning RRC carbies - melbourne area

A friend of the family has a 1984 RRC. Hes not mechnically minded at all, but seems to find rip off mechanics wanting to charge the earth. The latest is that hes RRC run a little rich, so he wants it tuned. But at a quote of $600, surely there must be someone either here in melbourne or a mechanic in melbourne that can do this for a fraction of the price!

    Any information greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

$600 to TUNE some RRC carbs sounds alot
Glen at Roverland in Boronia/Ferntree Gully was going to REBUILD mine for about that much. Maybe your friend accidently got a rebuild quote, not tune. Amongst the work Glen did for me, he tuned my carbs to the best he could as i wouldn't pay so much for the rebuild. I'm doing that myself

$600 is WAY too much for a tune up, I paid not much more than that for a total rebuild, tune and refit. It was worth it though !

if it's just resetting the mix I would guess at no more than $50-$60.
Saying that mine where also running rich but because they needle seat was worn hense the rebuild.
If he/you check the plugs, clean them and reduce the mix a little then run the motor for a day or two, (repeat if needed) black sooty plugs =too rich it will cost nothing and an easy job too.

If it's adjusted as far as it will go and it's still rich / sooty plugs then you are prob. looking at a carby rebuild in which case $600 is pretty good.

general engine tunes on a twin carbie engine including redoing the ignition timing and doing the tappet adjustments (assuming the engine has tappets) shouldnt go past $200 even if it is a v8.

if the carbies need a rebuild tho thats a different kettle of fish and at a guess $600 including parts isnt too bad.

But dont discount that the mechanic or company may not want to do the rangie and are just pricing themselves out of consideration, I do it occasionally usually when I either dont like the person, their vehicle or I know the job is technically beyond the scope of what I'm set up to deal with.

Please don't take offense here, this is a general comment about mechanics and paying people for their time in general:

The "pricing themselves out of consideration" thing is exactly the reason why i won't take the Rangie to a mechanic. Read my reply from yesterday in the "who services your LR and why" thread.

Why don't you just say "i don't want to do it, go somewhere else". Some people don't allow for this kind of pricing, and feel very bloody ripped off when they find out. Their next step is to bag the mechanic to their friends and post bad experiences on sites such as, i don't know, AULRO for example.

If i go to a LR specialist with a '79 RRC, i would expect they would want to fix it, but they don't. They see it as a waste of time cos they can't charge outragous prices simply cos its a $80,000+ vehicle like they're used to.

I took my Rangie to a local LR specialist (not saying who) to talk about overheating problems. Their response was "since you've done the thermostat and re-cored the radiator, we would have to strip the motor and look for the problem, we could put some 3.9L heads on, that should fix it". INSERT SWEAR WORDS HERE. I have had other bad experiences like this, one even includes the guy i recommended a few posts ^^^.

The best mechanic i had with the Rangie was an non-LR specialist, who owned a few Rangies. But he had his problems too.

Just so you understand how i feel about this, please read everything here as if it were in CAPITAL LETTERS, bad words after every sentence, and lots of:

    Rant over. Sorry.

Thanks people. It seems to me that the owner of said rangie does earn a nice quid, and I recon they see him coming and therefore try it on. Because hes in melb i cant help him else I would give it a shot. I told him for that price he can book the TT Line, come down for a week on holidays and get the super trustworthy Justinc to tune it for him, and probably would cost less (assuming a tune is all it needs).

As for pricing a job you dont want, I know its a common thing. For example, my brother in-law had a building who quoted him 70k for renovations, then the next week after the quote re-priced it to 120k. Reason for this, 'He really didnt want the job' and wanted my bro in-law to back out, the building even admitted this.
