I was under the impression that although they are the same gearbox, that they are setup differently to suit the shifting needed for the tdi as to the v8. Others may confirm or deny whether this is correct.

I went down this road a few months back and can confirm that shifting parameters for the ZF for the Tdi is completely different to the ZF for V8. They can be used interchangeably and have been by a few people but by all accounts will result in an appalling drive.
I went to the effort of chatting to a man in UK about how the combination went on his conversion. He said that it was tolerable at lower speeds and around town, but on the highway and at top end it was far too "thrashy". Low range use was very thrashy too.
A quick peruse of the shifting speed/rpm data for the two boxes will reveal why. Such as for example, at kickdown throttle position, the 1-2 shift occurs at 5250 rpm. On the Tdi the 1-2 shift at kickdown position occurs at 3500-3800.

Just get in contact with Andrew at LRA (Les Richmond Automotive) as his Rangie is TD5 with D1 auto behind it.
It cant be much different than a rangie I wouldnt think seems eveything under the skin is the same.
