TACHO Still Dead!

Hi Guys,
Just had to scoot up to Queensland over the weekend to pickup another R/Rover and guess what, no tacho either - Dead as a dodo. The Speedo is not much better either and doesn't read anything until it has been running for about 1/2 hour, then it only reads incorrect speeds up to 80 Kms.
A great thing when the vehicle had to be driven back from Qld on an Easter long weekend with double demerrit points and speed cameras every 10 kms all the way back on the Pacific Hyway.
Anyway, Both Vehicles have a Bosch 40A Alternator with the numbers U-K1-14V 40A 22 stamped on the housing.
I assumed that these were standard alternators??

Hmm, it may be a bit more than I can comprehend as I thought that the Bosch 40A U-K1 Alternator was standard equipment.
Can't do much on a long weekend, everything is closed but I may have to drop it down to the Auto Electrician and let him sort it out.

AFAIK Range Rovers always had Lucas ACR alternators and later ones Magneto Marelli , which bought out Lucas and then renamed the Lucas alternators
The Bosch alternators are from Australian cars such as Falcons.
If they are 40 amp they are from old model cars.
If the speedo was gone on a pre 89 Range Rover it is a mechanical problem, probably with the angle drive at he back of the speedo

25 or more years ago i upgraded the alternator on my Falcon XY 1970 to a Bosch alternator from a Falcon XB 1974 , cars still out the back so i had a look .

U-K1-14V-40A-22 .... 9 120 060 695 are some of its numbers they may seem familiar ?.

Your choice but i don`t think it would be worth the effort to find a tacho signal from either of your alternators if you have to pay for it to be done , if your able to do it yourself it costs almost nothing .

Either one is underated for its use in either/both cars , someone has possibly taken the cheapest option .

Although there is a chance that either 1 may have been rewound to increase its capacity .

Depending on how you feel about it the best option may be to price some new/reconditioned alternators of a higher capacity with the tacho signal or with the wire fitted in the final price . This would depend on long term holding of the car and peice of mind long term .
